Erica Wilson is a partner in the firm’s Litigation Department and member of its Patent Litigation Practice. Ms. Wilson focuses primarily on patent litigation, particularly in matters involving complex technology in the computer and biotechnology fields.

WORK FOR CLIENTS

Ms. Wilson is experienced in every aspect of complex, technical litigation, and has been a member of trial teams in cases involving biotechnology, GPS technology, computer networks, data compression technology, VPN technology, semiconductor manufacture and DRAM technology.

Ms. Wilson’s notable litigation work includes:

  • Lead counsel for Citrix Systems, Inc. against Realtime Data, LLC in a patent infringement matter involving data compression technology.  The case settled just prior to trial in January 2010.
  • Lead counsel for Citrix Systems, Inc. against SSL Services in a ongoing patent infringement suit involving VPN technology.
  • Counsel for The Regents of the University of California on major patent litigation against Monsanto Company over a pioneering biotechnology patent involving bovine growth hormone. The case settled for in excess of $200 million on the day before trial, which was one of the largest settlements ever in the biotechnology field.
  • Counsel for Hemisphere GPS in a patent infringement suit brought against Hemisphere by Trimble Navigation Ltd. involving a patent directed to the use of GPS technology used in agriculture. In that suit, Trimble sought in excess of $50 million in damages. The district court granted Hemisphere GPS’ motion for summary judgment of non-infringement, thereby ending Trimble’s case against Hemisphere.
  • Counsel for the University of California in Pro-Neuron v. Regents of the University of California (S.D. Super. Ct. 2003) in a case involving a dispute over who owned the patent invention rights to the use of a drug that may be beneficial in the treatment of Parkinson disease, Huntington disease and Alzheimer dementia. The case settled favorably for the University.
  • Counsel for Silicon Genesis in a patent infringement suit involving the manufacture of silicon on insulator wafers used in electronic devices. Following a jury trial the jury unanimously concluded that SiGen’s commercial process did not infringe Plaintiff’s patent and that Plaintiff’s patent was invalid.
  • Counsel for The Regents of the University of California in its patent litigation against Genentech involving a patent on the DNA for human growth hormone. That case resulted in a $200 million dollar settlement for the University.
  • Representation of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in connection with its micropower impulse radar technology; Jenoptik GmbH in connection with its apparatus for evaluating the surface conditions of semiconductors and semiconductor fab design; ATMI in connection with its semiconductor fabrication equipment; and Applied Materials in connection with its process for depositing silicon dioxide layers during semiconductor fabrication.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Prior to joining Goodwin Procter in 2007, Ms. Wilson was a partner in the Palo Alto office of Morrison & Foerster. Prior to attending law school, she worked as a project engineer with M. Rosenblatt & Son in San Francisco, managing structural and electrical engineers in designing HF and satellite communications systems for T-AGOS ships.

Ms. Wilson served for six years in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of lieutenant. Her service included supervising the overhaul of U.S. Navy ships in private shipyards and coordinating the installation of weapons systems on warships.
