Areas of Practice

Shep Remis, a partner in the firm’s Litigation Department, has practiced extensively in the areas of intellectual property litigation, products liability and mass torts litigation and complex commercial litigation. Mr. Remis has been a member of Goodwin Procter’s Executive and Allocations Committees, and chair of its Litigation Department and Alternative Dispute Resolution Practice. Most recently, he served as chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice.

Mr. Remis has extensive experience in trying cases, both to courts and juries, as well as in the full range of ADR procedures, including mediations and arbitrations. His practice includes counseling clients on ways to prevent or limit exposure to litigation or claims.

Work for Clients

In the area of intellectual property litigation, Mr. Remis has represented a leading computer industry company and has been involved in a variety of commercial, patent, trade secret and other intellectual property litigations for that client. Among the clients he represents in patent litigation are a major generic pharmaceutical company and the owners of patents on laser technology and computer hardware and software technologies. He has represented clients in Internet and e-commerce litigation and handled one of the nation’s first Internet litigations involving significant personal jurisdiction, trademark and domain name issues. Mr. Remis has represented a number of major motion picture producers and distributors in antitrust litigation, challenges to film distribution practices and copyright and video piracy litigation.

In the area of products liability and mass tort litigation, Mr. Remis is currently national coordinating counsel in the defense of litigation for a company whose affiliates manufactured and sold epoxies and other industrial materials alleged to contain asbestos. He previously served as national trial and coordinating counsel for a major corporation in litigation involving asbestos-in-buildings claims. Professional Activities

Mr. Remis is a member of the Boston, Massachusetts and American Bar Associations, as well as a member of the Trial Practice Section of the MBA and the Litigation Section of the ABA. He is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Defense Research Institute and the CPR International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution, including serving on its Panel of Distinguished Neutrals. Publications/Presentations

Mr. Remis has spoken and lectured on intellectual property, Internet and e-commerce law, products liability and toxic tort topics, litigation management, ADR and Year 2000 issues before various groups, including the Massachusetts Bar Association, Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Defense Research Institute, American Corporate Counsel Association, New England Corporate Counsel Association, Law Journal Seminars-Press, Boston College Law School and Harvard Medical School.

Bar and Court Admissions

Mr. Remis is admitted to the bars of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the State of New York; the U.S. District Courts for the District of Massachusetts, the Northern District of New York, Southern District of New York, Eastern District of New York and Western District of New York; the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Eleventh, and Federal Circuits; and the U.S. Supreme Court. In addition, he has been specially admitted for particular representation in state and federal courts in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont and Washington.
