Areas of Practice

Douglas Kline, a partner in Goodwin Procter's Intellectual Property Group, concentrates his practice on all aspects of intellectual property litigation, particularly patent infringement matters and other disputes related to the enforcement of intellectual property rights. Mr. Kline has litigated and tried cases before judges and juries throughout the United States.

Work for Clients

Mr. Kline counsels clients in all areas concerning intellectual property, with particular emphasis on patent rights. He advises inventors, companies, investors and underwriters concerning patent enforcement and infringement risks. He advises clients regarding technology transfer, including the negotiation and drafting of all forms of related agreements such as patent licenses and technology development and license agreements. Mr. Kline also works with clients to develop patent portfolio development strategies, and oversees the preparation and prosecution of patent applications both in the United States  and abroad.

Mr. Kline has won multimillion-dollar jury verdicts of willful patent infringement, and has defeated claims against clients in the hundreds of millions of dollars. He has coordinated and overseen the execution of multi-district litigation in the United States  and Europe, and his expertise has been cited in the New York Times, Boston Globe, Boston Business Journal, IP Law & Business, MIT Technology Review and Corporate Legal Times, along with the influential technology news wire IDG News Service.

Professional Activities

Mr. Kline has been selected for inclusion in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business as a leading intellectual property lawyer in the field of Intellectual Property. He was also identified in Boston Magazine (October 2004) as one of the top 100 lawyers in Boston.

Professional Experience

Prior to joining Goodwin Procter in 2005, Mr. Kline was a partner at Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault in Boston, where he chaired the Patent and Intellectual Property Practice Group and Intellectual Property Litigation Group.

Bar and Court Admissions

Mr. Kline is admitted to the bars of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; the U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts; the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Texas; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit; and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. In addition, he has been admitted pro hac vice to federal courts throughout the country. Mr. Kline is registered to practice with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
