Areas of Practice

Manny Grillo is a partner in the firm's Business Law Department and serves as co-chair of its Financial Restructuring Practice. Mr. Grillo has broad-based experience representing secured and unsecured creditors, debtors and court-appointed trustees, as well as both sellers and purchasers in distressed mergers and acquisitions conducted under the auspices of the Bankruptcy Code. His experience includes cross-border and prepackaged bankruptcy cases.

Work for Clients

Mr. Grillo regularly advises banks, hedge funds and other financial institutions regarding insolvency and restructuring matters in complex financing, securitization and derivative securities transactions. He has recently represented the agent banks in restructurings for wireless telecom carriers, high-tech and industrial manufacturing companies and candy manufacturing companies.

In addition, Mr. Grillo has represented chapter 11 debtors and distressed companies in out-of-court workouts, including one of the largest wool producers in the U.S. in the sale of its assets and a large carpet manufacturing company. He also advises clients in connection with the purchase and sale of distressed claims. Mr. Grillo frequently represents both plaintiffs and defendants in bankruptcy litigation, including fraudulent conveyance actions and preference cases.

Professional Activities

Mr. Grillo is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, Federal Bar Association (bankruptcy co-chair, New York chapter) and the Turnaround Management Association.

Publications/Presentations

Mr. Grillo is the author of “From First Dibs to the Last in Line” which appeared in the National Law Journal, and co-author of “Application of Bankruptcy Laws to Limited Liability Companies” which appeared in New York Limited Liability Companies and Partnerships (West’s New York Practice Series 2002). In addition, he is a frequent speaker and presenter for the Strategic Research Institute, Practicing Law Institute and Report on Business television network in Canada.

Professional Experience

Prior to joining Goodwin Procter, Mr. Grillo was a partner at Torys LLP in New York City. Before that, he was a partner at Salans/Christy & Viener. He began his career as an Honors Program Attorney in the Office of the United States Trustee for the Southern District of New York of the U.S. Department of Justice, from 1991 to 1993.

Mr. Grillo is admitted to the bar of the State of New York, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
