David Goldstone, a partner in the firm’s Litigation Department, is nationally recognized for his experience in litigation relating to information technologies. Mr. Goldstone has considerable experience in trade secret and patent litigation, and in handling other technology-focused investigations and legal disputes, ranging from software licensing to trademark and copyright infringement to computer security. As a former federal prosecutor and a registered patent attorney with undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT, Mr. Goldstone is uniquely qualified to advise clients in all aspects of intellectual property law, as well as privacy and data security matters.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

In participation with the American Bar Association, Mr. Goldstone is currently co-chair of the Criminal Justice Section’s Cyber Crime Committee.

MEDIA

Mr. Goldstone speaks frequently at conferences and is a regular contributor to the American Bar Association’s National Institutes on Computers and Law. For several years, he taught courses on “Law of Cyberspace” as an adjunct professor at the law schools of Georgetown University and George Washington University.

Mr. Goldstone has published many articles on novel legal issues raised by the use of information technology, computers and the Internet. His recent publications include “Finding the Anonymous Dogs on the Internet” (2009); “The Year’s Top Developments in Privacy and Data Security Law” (2008); and “E-Mail Etiquette, version 2.0” (2008). Mr. Goldstone also authored the Justice Department’s “Manual on Prosecuting Intellectual Property Crime” (2001); “International Dimensions of Crimes in Cyberspace,” 22 Fordham Int’l L.J. 1924 (2001); “The Criminalization of Trademark Counterfeiting,” 31 Conn. L. Rev. 1 (1998); “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Cyberforum: Public vs. Private in Cyberspace Speech,” 69 U. Col. L. Rev. 1 (1998); and “The Public Forum Doctrine in the Age of Information Superhighway,” 46 Hastings L.J. 335 (1995).

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Prior to joining Goodwin Procter in 2005, Mr. Goldstone practiced at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He was previously a Senior Litigation Counsel and Trial Attorney in the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., from 1996 to 2001. In 1998, Mr. Goldstone served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia. In 1994-1995, he clerked for the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

Mr. Goldstone is admitted to the bars of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the District of Columbia and the U.S. District Courts for the Districts of Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. He is registered to practice with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Mr. Goldstone has been recognized for his work in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business and has been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America. While attending law school, he was an articles editor for the Harvard Journal of Law and Technology.
