Andy Chan is a partner in the firm’s Litigation Department and a member of the Patent Litigation Group, where he focuses on intellectual property matters with a particular concentration on patent litigation involving complex technology in the biotechnology, chemical and information technology fields. Mr. Chan joined Goodwin Procter in 2009.
WORK FOR CLIENTS
Mr. Chan has advised clients on intellectual property issues in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemical industries. He has also represented clients in a variety of other technological arts, including computer networks, e-commerce, data compression technology, DVD authoring software, and electronic data systems.
He has been a member of trial teams as both plaintiff's counsel and defense counsel. In 2007, he was part of the trial team that successfully asserted a biotechnology leader's patent portfolio covering a recombinant protein against a competitor after a four-week jury and bench trial in the District of Massachusetts. Mr. Chan has experience in litigation, strategic counseling and reexamination.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Prior to joining Goodwin Procter, Mr. Chan practiced high-stakes patent litigation as an associate of a boutique patent litigation firm. While attending law school, he was a scholar at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he worked to license micropower impulse radar and robotic vision technologies. Before that, Mr. Chan was a chemist for a Silicon Valley manufacturer of capacitive inclinometers and angle sensors, where his work focused on polyimide chemistry and complex polymer coatings.

Mr. Chan is admitted to practice in California, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
RECOGNITION
While attending law school, Mr. Chan served as Senior Production Editor for the Santa Clara Computer and High Technology Law Journal, and received the Best Brief Award in legal research and writing.
