Goodwin Procter’s Washington, D.C. office conducts a national practice involving novel and complex legal work. We provide highly specialized services, working with clients on difficult and sensitive matters that require creative analysis and hard work. Our Washington office includes the former law firm of Shea & Gardner, which combined with Goodwin Procter on October 1, 2004.
Our Washington lawyers are regularly retained to represent parties in high stakes litigation in courts and administrative agencies throughout the country. We represent both plaintiffs and defendants and handle matters from inception to the completion of the appeals process. We also help identify and manage litigation risk and are experienced in all forms of alternative dispute resolution.
We have particular expertise in disputes involving complex commercial litigation and class actions, products liability and toxic torts, consumer financial services, intellectual property, environmental matters, white collar crime and governmental investigations, insurance, labor and employment, and securities. Our D.C. office also has a substantive Supreme Court and appellate practice.
In addition to our extensive litigation practice, we conduct a substantial regulatory practice, representing clients before a broad spectrum of state and federal agencies. We have significant regulatory expertise in the energy, environmental, insurance, securities and transportation sectors, and have been assisting clients with regulatory advisory work in these sectors for over 20 years.
Prominent members of our Private Equity Practice are resident in Washington, and the FDA counseling component of our Life Sciences Practice also operates out of our D.C. office.
Our Washington office is also a vital component of our Financial Services Practice, which is one of the nation’s largest. Our Washington attorneys represent many of the nation’s leading financial services firms, banks, corporations and trade associations, and are regularly consulted by industry leaders on issues of public policy and legislation, as well as on matters involving regulatory compliance, securities activities, corporate governance, antitrust and trade regulation, and litigation.
Attorneys in our Washington office provide both strategic advice and legal assistance to clients with business before the Executive Branch and the U.S. Congress. We have worked closely on behalf of our clients with members and staff of House and Senate committees on varied legislation. Our work in this area has included preparing Congressional testimony, formulating legislative proposals, analyzing constitutional implications of specific legislation and responding to opponents.
A significant percentage of the 110 lawyers in our Washington office have clerked for judges of the federal courts or state supreme courts, including several who served as U.S. Supreme Court clerks; most were also members of their law reviews, many serving as editor-in-chief.
Many of our Washington attorneys have served in government office, including both policy-making and legal positions, before returning to private practice.
