11.07.12

BOSTON, Nov. 7, 2012 — Goodwin Procter, a national Am Law 50 firm, announced today that Abim Thomas, formerly Deputy Chief Legal Counsel to Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, has joined the firm’s Litigation Department as counsel in its Boston office. Thomas will be a member of Goodwin’s Securities Litigation & White Collar Defense Group, as well as the firm’s Gaming, Gambling & Sweepstakes Practice.

Over the course of her tenure in the Governor’s office, Thomas’ work focused primarily on support of the administration’s initiatives in economic development, housing and public safety. She advised the Governor on Massachusetts’ 2011 gaming bill and served as the state’s lead negotiator for the 2012 tribal-state gaming compact. Thomas also drafted recommendations to improve the Probation Department and legislation to reform Massachusetts’ ethics and lobbying laws.

“We are delighted that Abim has selected Goodwin Procter as her firm of choice for her return to private practice,” said Mark Tully, chairman of Goodwin’s Litigation Department. “Her experience expands our ability to advise companies, entrepreneurs and investors on online, as well as brick-and-mortar, casino gaming and gambling issues.  And Abim adds to our strength in representing those caught up in government investigations and conducting major internal corporate investigations.”

Thomas earned her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where she served as an editor for the Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law, and graduated from Harvard College, where she served as class president. She is vice president of the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association, serves on the board of the Women’s Bar Foundation and was recently selected by the Women’s Bar Association as a member of its Women’s Leadership Initiative.  A member of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court’s Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services, Thomas has worked for the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights in both Boston and San Francisco. She is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts.

Thomas can be reached at 617-570-1724 or athomas@goodwinprocter.com
