The Summer Experience

Work. Learn. Connect.

Boston, Los Angeles, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Silicon Valley or Washington. Practice areas in just about every traditional and emerging field of law. You will work, learn, and connect with peers, associates, and partners at the firm. You’ll leave our program with valuable mentors, a large professional and social network, and a very good idea of what it’s like to work at Goodwin Procter.

WORK

As a summer associate, we think you’ll be surprised by how quickly you become an integral part of our legal team at Goodwin Procter. On any given day, you might find yourself immersed in a deposition, a trial, a negotiation session, document drafting, a client meeting, or some other hands-on professional work experience.

Each office has a unique approach to the summer associate program. Regardless of which city you choose, you will be exposed to a variety of projects and cases at different stages, so you will have both a broad overview and some deep-diving into specific issues. And we’ll encourage you to participate in any area of our practice that piques your interest, including pro bono work. At the end of the summer, you will have a better understanding of legal practices and life at our firm. To learn more about each of our offices, click on one of the locations above.

LEARN

Goodwin Procter’s professional development and training team is committed to helping you find your passion and enthusiasm for your work. Our goal is to train, motivate, and develop outstanding lawyers. We believe a great legal education comes from a balance of formal training and lots of opportunities to apply what you’ve learned to what you do in the office each day.

Our team has designed a broad and engaging program tailored to your needs and interests. Some courses, like deposition training, jury selection, and mock trial, are designed for people who want to focus on litigation. Others are geared toward business law, including anatomy of a corporate transaction and introduction to intellectual property. You will also find mentors in every practice area who are ready, willing and available to answer your questions and introduce you to others who can help you along the way.

While some firms may want you to see what it’s like to be a summer associate, we want you to experience life as an attorney. That’s why you are cordially invited to sit in on regular associate training sessions and practice area meetings. Learning is a continual, dynamic process. We encourage you to find out more about our professional development and training programs.

CONNECT

We know you’ve worked really hard to get where you are. Making time to connect with your new colleagues is important, too. A collaborative and supportive atmosphere is a key part of the Goodwin Procter culture. With that in mind, we’ve created a summer program that includes plenty of extracurricular fun. Everything is designed to help you get to know your fellow summer associates and other colleagues outside the work environment.

We believe summer should include boat cruises, outdoor concerts, and baseball games, so you can expect these to be part of your experience at Goodwin Procter. Spontaneous events are also initiated by the summer associates, often partnering with their mentors at the firm. These have included everything from sport fishing and golfing to gourmet cooking, billiards, and live jazz.

One of the many advantages of being a national firm is that our activities are as varied as our office locations. If you’re in New York for the summer, you might see a Broadway show, attend a gallery opening, and enjoy a few only-in-Manhattan experiences. West Coast summer associates have been known to go wine tasting, sailing, and touring in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Activities and events unique to Boston and Washington – from cultural events to historic tours – are all part of the program. All summer associates come to Boston for training and the opportunity to network with other associates from all over the country.
